LISA DERRICK, LOS ANGELES, CA -- The great lion of the Los Angeles world, Ed Moses, stepped to the podium on LACMA's terrace, escorted by painter Charles Christopher Hill.
...
The two began to sing softly and made trilling noises, quieting the crowd. Charles spoke first.
"Victoria," he said, "Didn't want a memorial or party..." The artists, gallery owners, collectors, friends, including LACMA staff laughed softly. They all knew that Victoria Blyth Hill, one of the world's leading art conservators who died on April 20, 2013, loved to gather her friends together. The event at LACMA was a celebration of her warmth, her talent and skill; her love of art, of her friends, and of her husband Charles.
Ed Moses began to speak about meeting Victoria first when he was sixty, about how she had owned a bar, recounting anecdotes and stories. He reminisced about how Victoria mobilized all available L.A. art conservators to hurry to Joe Goode's studio after a huge fire, urging them to save the all art they could, thus reminding us of how important art was to Victoria and what a gentle force she was. Then Ed began trilling softly again, and sat back down.
