But often absent from the debate around gun violence is the anti-Blackness at its core. In this clip, historian Carol Anderson, author of The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America, explains how anti-Blackness determined the very decision to include the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights.
Anderson is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American Studies at Emory University. Her previous books include White Rage and the 2018 One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression Is Destroying Our Democracy.
