there, but both ships may remain in the region.
Britain is also sending eight Tornado ground-attack planes to Kuwait.
Officially, it's due to be replacing H-M-S Invincible, the aircraft carrier Britain sent to the gulf in January along with 2,500 air force and navy personnel.
But as the H-M-S Illustrious left Egypt's Suez Canal and entered the Red Sea Friday, it was clear that the British government has the option of keeping both warships in the Gulf.
The Illustrious is in a convoy with a frigate, H-M-S Fort George, and a supply ship, H-M-S Somerset.
The carrier will join the rest of the Anglo-US armada gathered in the Gulf.
The British vessels were accompanied through the canal by a French frigate.
Britain decided in mid-January to send the Invincible to the region, alongside two US carriers.
The Invincible, carries seven Harrier G-R-7 jet bombers, seven Sea Harrier F-A-2 jets and four Sea King helicopters.
Britain has also sent eight Tornado jet bombers to Kuwait.
Another six Tornados are based in Turkey.
