(26 May 2014) Japan's prime minister met with his Bangladeshi counterpart in Tokyo on Monday and signed an agreement pledging economic assistance to Bangladesh worth billions of US dollars.

e and Sheikh Hasina signed the agreement pledging loans worth 600 billion Japanese yen (approximately 6 billion US dollars) over four to five years.
"Bangladesh has great economic potential. In order to realise its potential and expedite further growth," he said.
He added the assistance would be used to help the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt project, focusing investment on Bangladesh's infrastructure.
Hasina thanked Abe on behalf of the Bangladeshi people and government.
"Prime Minister Abe assured his intention to promote the concept of the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt," she said.
Hasina is in Japan on a four-day trip to strengthen ties between the two countries is expected to leave on Wednesday.
