rast, the video has been enhanced to bring out the details. I was never close enough to allow for a clear video shot, and it was apparent the task at hand was more to navigate and be safe rather than collect imagery. That said, I do apologize for the terrible quality of this video. The audio, I believe, is very important as I did my best to narrate the situation as I went along, including discussing the reasoning behind my decisions and the concerns I had in this very rare tornado.
I was south of the tornado, originally spotting it south of the Reno Airport near a homestead off Airport Road. I backed south, skirting the outer edge of the tornado til clearing it and moving east. The house in the beginning part of the video would take EF-3 damage less than two minutes after I turned southbound on Airport Road. I kept pace with it, stair-stepping it on roads north of Union City, and was in view of it, albeit low contrast, during most of it's 40-minute life cycle.
The tornado was rated EF-5 based on the velocity data from mobile doppler radar from the University of Oklahoma RAXPOL Radar as well as the DOW (Doppler on Wheels). In addition, the width of this tornado maxed out at 2.6 miles just east of US-81 making it the largest tornado ever recorded in the United States. It was on the ground for 16.2 miles and had a measured wind speed of 296mph below 500ft.
In loving memory of my dear friends, teammates, and brothers... Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young... may your legacy live forever, and the work you have left behind continue to be fulfilled by those who will live out your passions you all have left behind with us. I thank you all for your amazing friendship over the years, and for the wisdom you have left with me. No words will ever suffice for how much I will miss our time in the field together, but I know very well your spirits will find a place in my vehicle on every storm I chase... ciao for now, my friends...
