#CollectionStories: Beginnings, how a private collection became open to public One of the earliest collectors of Indian Art post-independence, Nicholson bought his first painting in 1968. Soon he began frequenting the only Bombay art galleries of the time, Pundole’s and Chemould. Both galleries had also opened in the 60s. By the 70s, he had built a sizeable collection and was a regular amongst the art community in the city. Nicholson’s vision for his collection was to make it accessible to the public by building a museum of contemporary art. In 1976, he partnered with JRD Tata and established the ‘Jehangir Nicholson Museum of Modern Art’ at the NCPA (National Centre for the Performing Arts). Narayan Menon (Chairperson of the NCPA) and Bal Chhabda helped in the setting up of the museum. The Museum closed shortly after Nicholson's death in 2001. 1.
