Coucou! Some news! Im very happy to announce that I’m now represented by the brilliant @beatricegalilee and to celebrate we are releasing some of my painting work (which you have never seen- as I never shared it!) in a limited edition of signed prints we did with the brilliant Jealous Gallery @jealous_london ❤️. You can enquire about the paintings and prints by emailing us! 'THE MAGICIAN, ALGERIA' IS 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8 cm). 🔥🔥 get one by emailing admin@nellyben.com 🔥🔥 In the series titled ‘RED GOLD’, I use paint to share the myths and legends of the characters for my forthcoming feature length film, Red Moon- which will be released in 2022. ‘Red Moon’ is a diasporic investigation of human settlement on the moon. In one painting (this one!) I explore the true story of Napoleon III who faced a 'native wizard' infestation in the yoke of colonial oppression in Algeria in 1865, and as a result he called in upon the services of magician, Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin- known as Houdini, and his colleagues to deal with the problem. Other paintings deal with topics of parallel identities and diasporic displacement in a collaboration with my doppelgangers in Algeria and Armenia. Developing this theme further, I also collaborated with my sister photographer @laura_ben_hayoun through image conversations, discussing landscapes and locations our family members might have visited. In the byzantine tradition of painting icons and encapsulating mystical energies into the image, I use paintings and drawings as connectors to new worlds I bring to reality in my productions. Painting is the starting point of all my thought processes and experiments. Let us know what you think! 🧿🧿 And if you want us to release more limited edition prints (as I’m a painting machine!) xx nelly 💝💋 #signedprint #independentartist #limitededition #artistsupportpledge
