#tbt This was one of my heroes. my grandmother. She immigrated from Jamaica to Guatemala at the age of 16. Growing up surrounded by such powerful black people like my grandmother and my father I was always told, “you’re going to have to work twice as hard, and be twice as careful.” I remember having such anger when I would hear people say, “ahi viene el negro”(here comes the black man) when my dad would walk in. Growing up I faced the same problems. Heard close friends see two little black kids running around and heard them say, “someone stop those monkeys.” Had ex girlfriends mothers tell me they didn’t want their daughters to date me because I was black. LATINOS I URGE YOU, we do have a problem. STOP ignoring the matters at hand. Change starts when we start having the conversation. LETS TALK. Ella es una de mis héroes, mi abuela. Creciendo, enfrente los mismos problemas. Escuche a dos amigos que veían a dos niños pequeños corriendo decir, “alguien pare a esos monos”.
