I’ve been thinking about Robert Ryman and reflecting on how much his work has impacted me. It was really his work, and Robert Irwin’s, that shook my early understanding of what a medium can be—that it can, itself, be the subject or source of meaning. I find in my own practice I am always seeking ways in which the meaning is deeply mirrored within both the medium and the inquiry. The Light Recording series was my first effort in this, building my own lensless cameras to distill photography down to its basic ingredients—light and light sensitive materials—and then documenting solar and lunar light phenomena to chronicle the subtle shifts in light we experience across a day or season; To let light tell its own story with light’s own trace. I’ve also been thinking that with each of the works of Ryman’s that I’ve had the good fortune to encounter, I’ve learned that a whisper can be an epic calling, a formidable challenge, and a generous offering. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to exhibit my work alongside his, shown here also with another of my favorites, Sol LeWitt.
