In 1915 my great grandmother was shot in her home and left for dead while her husband and seven of her children were murdered while she lay on the floor with her eyes closed. She then escaped and swam across the Euphrates River to safety but lost her eighth child to drowning in the process. Years later she made her way to America while raising a war baby on her own that belonged to a German soldier. Because of the resilience and perseverance of my great grandmother and the rest of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 I exist.
