Rodney Smith 12/24/1947 — 12/5/2016 Photographer Rodney Lewis Smith, who helped us see the world as a place of beauty, grace, style, and wit, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Monday, December 5th, at age 68. Roddy, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was a unique man. He orchestrated every detail of his life and work, where he insisted on maintaining the most exacting of standards. He was often described as "difficult", but explained that it was because he was willing to do anything to make an image. His creative process was intricately connected to how he examined his own life, how he got to know himself, how he drew clarity from his emotions and translated them into pictures. “I kind of represent a world that is possible if people act at their best. It’s a world that’s slightly beyond reach, beyond everyday experience, but it’s definitely not impossible,” he said reflecting on his work last year. Rodney is survived by his wife, Leslie Smolan, his son Jonah Smith, his daughter Savannah Smith, his sister, Marianne Harrison and his iconic body of work. Donations in his honor, can be made to New York's Classical Music Radio Station, www.wqxr.org, or the Palisades Free Library, NY www.palisadeslibrary.org
