This is a band called Green Day. I can remember exactly where i was at the exact time that i heard any record that flipped the switch of inspiration for me.
I was driving our band van and trailer into Lincoln, NE to load-in for Soundcheck at a club called The Hurricane on any sleepy Monday night. I think there was probably 10 people at that show, and we were probably up against a kegger down the road at a frat house or maybe there was a football game in town.
Either way, it was the day that i heard “Longview” (off of the album “Dookie”) for the first time. I remember it so clearly. It was everything i wanted when pop melody and attitude had not shared a moment together on a recording in some years. It sounded like The Turtles meets the Sex Pistols.... and i was IN.
We were still trying to figure out who we were as musicians and artists. When i heard this CD (!) at the time, i knew it would shape our next band’s sound (The Marvelous 3) and style. We took the bait and for what it’s worth, we scored a minor hit out of the deal that would snowball a chain of events to lead me to here.
Here? Where are we now? Well.. let me tell you where. It led me to actually getting in the studio to make a record with not only one of my influences, but also one of the greatest punk rock bands of all time.
Billie Joe wanted to take some chances and not go down the same well traveled musical paths on this trip. I respected it and said I’d honor his mission and help him achieve his vision (purists be damned). The result is 26min of bombastic party anthems that just fucking rock. We had a Number 1 rock song on the chart with the first single (“Father Of All..”) and the second single (“Oh Yeah”) is headed that direction now.
Billie, Mike, and Tre.. what can i say. I love you like brothers and thank you for letting me come along for the ride.
The new album “Father Of All Motherfuckers” from Green Day is out now. Its 3 brothers that still love what they do more than ever. Its got a rainbow-puking unicorn on the cover art. It’s rock
