📸 In January, USA TODAY photographer Megan Smith captured a historic moment when Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif, became the first House speaker in 164 years who required more than a single round of voting to be elected to the post. It took him 15 rounds.
“While Kevin McCarthy’s tenure didn’t last long, under a year, his ouster showcased the power of a few ultra-conservatives in power,” said Smith about the significance of the image. “That continued throughout his role as Speaker while averting a government shutdown during negotiations with President Biden. We are seeing this play out still today in American politics.”
