If you’re from Wilmington, California, you know to call it Wilmas – this place boxed in by the harbor, the oil refineries and the elevated freeways. Here’s what else you know if you’re from Wilmas. You know gang members sling, and guns fly out of trunks and trap houses, a few hundred dollars apiece. You know if you’re from the east side or the west side, and who rules each. You know there are rules to this life. If you’re on the street, there may be beef. So there will be guns. Jose “Coach” Refugio Quezada Jr. lived in Wilmas nearly his whole life. He spent 30 years coaching youth baseball and basketball. He knew that kept kids off the streets. “Sports keep you focused in the right direction,” he always said. And when someone in Wilmington was killed, Jose would head up a barbecue fundraiser to help the grieving family. “I bless to be blessed,” he would say. He was cooking for his community again on a hot night in July. The barbecue was a success. It was just about time to go home. That was the night things changed for Jose’s family, and for Wilmington. 📸: @sandyhooper, @yannick_peterhans, Robert Hanashiro / @usatoday
