Israel and Hamas entered the second day of war after stunning and deadly surprise attacks by the Palestinian militant group that coincided with a Jewish holiday and the 50th anniversary of the start of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Thousands of rockets fired from Gaza pounded parts of southern and central Israel, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Hamas militants infiltrated Israeli areas near the Gaza border, killing over 600 Israelis and taking hostages, prompting the Israeli military to strike back. Palestinian authorities said more than 300 fighters and civilians have been killed by Israeli counterattacks in Gaza. Thousands of people were reported wounded on both sides.
