Five Americans imprisoned in Iran were on a plane Monday along with two family members after being released as part of a deal the Biden administration negotiated with Tehran.
The deal also involved a release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian oil revenues and freeing five Iranians charged or convicted of non-violent crimes, according to U.S. officials. Three of the Iranians did not want to go back to Iran. Iran state media said one wanted to go to a third country and two will stay in the U.S.
The U.S. and Iran have not had formal diplomatic relations since 1980. The exchange could be viewed as a step toward de-escalation and possibly a future revival of the nuclear deal.
