American teenage girls are increasingly depressed, saddened, and considering suicide more often than in past years, according a CDC study published in February. Fifty-seven percent of females said they had persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. That's up from 36% in 2011 and nearly double 29% of males in the same category in 2021. The report also noted “ongoing and extreme distress" of LGBQ+ teens, who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning. The CDC survey did not have a question assessing gender identity, so data does not reflect students who identify as transgender or nonbinary.
