The powerful earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria this week are among the most devastating and deadliest quakes in recent history. The death toll continued to climb to more than 19,300 across the two countries Thursday, making the quakes the deadliest seen worldwide in more than a decade. Many are still trapped under the rubble. This week's deaths in Turkey and Syria surpassed Japan’s Fukushima disaster of 2011, when a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami and killed more than 18,400 people.
