Wildlife officials are again warning hunters to avoid eating untested game following recent discoveries of wild deer in Virginia and Wisconsin infected with a fatal brain-destroying sickness known as chronic wasting disease or “zombie deer” disease. The disease attacks the brains, nervous systems, and other tissues of cervids, the deer family: deer, elk, moose, reindeer and others. The brains of infected animals develop holes and become spongy. The condition — similar to the mad cow disease of the 1980s — is fatal. The disease has been called the “zombie deer virus” because infected animals experience weight loss, lack of coordination, listlessness, and drooling as it progresses.
