But what if no athletic trainer had been present? One in three American high schools don’t have access to a certified athletic trainer, according to the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). And it's been that way since NATA first started tracking data about a decade ago. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among young athletes, according to the Mayo Clinic, with between one in 50,000 to one in 80,000 deaths per year.
