Any same-sex romantic behavior — including going on a date, holding hands and kissing — is a violation of BYU’s Honor Code. Violations of the Honor Code can result in disciplinary action, including expulsion from the school. The challenges for athletes who identify as LGBTQ are emerging from the shadows at BYU, and they are speaking out about what life is like to be a queer athlete at BYU. Current and past queer athletes at Brigham Young University are voicing their displeasure with the school’s honor code, which forbids any same-sex romantic behavior and threatens disciplinary action as severe as expulsion.
