Earlier this month, the CDC issued an alert about an increase in cases of invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) in the U.S. iGAS is more severe, life-threatening disease that can result from Group A strep, which is the most common cause of bacterial pharyngitis, or “strep throat,” in school-age children. Symptoms of strep throat typically include sore throat, headache, fever and a red rash known as scarlet fever. It can be treated with antibiotics and acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and pain.
