Pictures of 2022: USA TODAY Network photographers captured pivotal moments of the year. They share their thoughts behind their most memorable photo. @briana_sanchez: When news began breaking about Robb Elementary School, I immediately felt numb, being hit with the reality that it was happening again. I covered the El Paso Walmart shooting heavily while I was working at the El Paso Times and the thought of grieving these lives and telling these stories again made my heart sink. We document these dark moments in history in hopes that people will see them, be impacted by them and create change. It becomes disheartening when we, as photojournalists, show up and try to document history for better or for worse and see no change. When I took this photo of this woman and this young girl, they did not want to give me their names or relation, I felt horrible being a part of the mass media that descended upon the small town of Uvalde. As we continued to do follow up stories throughout the year I continued to try and photograph this community and their stories with so much care and compassion but also respect boundaries during the grieving process. Any stories people share with us will forever be cherished and I’ll forever have immense gratitude towards this community.
