They share their thoughts behind their most memorable photo. @guygruber: The crazy thing about this photograph was you knew it was going to happen, but you didn’t know when. Shaun White finished just out of the medals placing fourth in the snowboard competition finals at the Beijing Winter Olympics. White had earlier announced the Beijing Olympic snowboard competition was going to be his last and he was going to retire. Following the event, White moved around the sidelines away from the field of play during the medal ceremony and post-event interviews. Knowing this was White’s final Olympic games and he was hanging it all up for good professionally, I focused on the post-event ceremonies but always kept looking around to the edges of the venue to see if and when White would walk back into the halfpipe and say goodbye in his own way and walk off into the sunset of retirement. I wasn’t the only photographer waiting for this moment and a large crush of photographers gathered around White when he finally walked back to the base of the halfpipe. When I first pulled my camera up to start making photos of White, I immediately noticed my camera had zero power, it was dead. Looking down, I saw the battery case had opened and my battery had ejected out in the crush of jostling photographers pushing close around White. Believe it or not, losing that battery was my lucky charm that day. I dropped down to my knees in the snow and quickly fumbled around pulling a battery from another camera body around my shoulder to swap into my dead wide-angle body as White moved away from me taking the scrum of photographers along with him. Before I could stand back up, White turned away from the pressing scrum and stumbled back towards where I was kneeling all alone in the snow, almost like I had anticipated where he would go.
