Antisemitism. Transphobia. Racism. It's hard to miss any of these while scrolling social media.
It's no wonder that more than a quarter of American adults are too stressed to function, according to the American Psychological Association, citing the current political and racial climates as significant stressors.
"The past two years have left us all kind of worse for wear, and pop culture and social media are simply reflective barometers of what we've experienced," says T.M. Robinson-Mosley, counseling psychologist. "It really just reflects how unwell America is right now."
Our divisive climate has stoked the partisan fires of social media, making hateful rhetoric a given across platforms despite patchwork efforts to tone it down. The key to pushing past said hate, experts say, is disengaging.
