Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in Britain’s history, died at age 96 at Balmoral Castle, the royal family's residence in Scotland.
Her son and heir, Prince Charles, 73, is now King Charles III. The coronation ceremony will take place in a few months, after a period of national mourning.
Elizabeth was Britain's 41st monarch since William the Conqueror in 1066. During her seven decades as monarch, she met 13 U.S. presidents and was served by 15 prime ministers.
Her reign lasted through decades of upheaval around the world and ended after the U.K. left the European Union and endured the COVID-19 pandemic.
