The tragedy stunned the world. Twenty five years ago, Princess Diana was killed in a horrific car crash in Paris. The news sent shockwaves around the globe. It was hard to take in: Diana, Princess of Wales – who celebrated her 36th birthday the month before – was beloved by millions in the United Kingdom and beyond. Her two sons, William and Harry, were so young. She had done so much good. It seemed like the whole world was mourning. How could such a presence suddenly vanish, and in such a devastating way? A swarm of paparazzi was camped outside the Ritz hotel in Paris when Princess Diana, her beau, Dodi Fayed, and a bodyguard climbed into a Mercedes-Benz driven by Henri Paul – who was later found to have been intoxicated – and left the hotel, racing through the streets in a misguided attempt to outrun the photographers. Shortly after midnight on Aug. 31, 1997, the speeding car smashed into a concrete pillar in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel. Diana was rushed to a hospital, where she died a few hours later. Fayed and the driver were also killed in the crash; the bodyguard survived. Princess Diana left behind a poignant legacy. Aside from her activism, humanitarian efforts, royal status and sophisticated fashion sense, the beloved "People's Princess" may best be remembered for how she reached out to people in a way no other royal had done before. 🔗 Visit our link in bio for a look back on Princess Diana's life in photos. 📸 Getty Images #PrincessDiana
