As of Aug 23, 47% of the contiguous U.S. was enduring drought conditions, according to Drought.gov.
Heat waves, which can be a major factor in droughts, are forecast to increase in potency and duration because of climate change, according to scientists who fear the globe is ill-prepared to handle the punishing toll.
With every increase, scientists say, extreme temperatures and heat waves will have a brutal effect on daily life, human health, the workforce and transportation.
