One in every 160 babies born in the U.S. are born still. And yet, few states have paid family leave, much less a program that covers stillbirth.
After a stillbirth, families are left to cobble together time away from work. That can mean using up vacation time or paid time off, taking other leave that pays a fraction of what they would have gotten under paid family leave or relying on the generosity of their employers.
But the voices of these families are getting louder as they call for more financial and emotional support for parents after a stillbirth, and more research and education for prevention.
A "stillbirth" describes a delivery in which a baby is born dead anywhere from 20 weeks to full term. Before 20 weeks, the loss of a pregnancy is considered a miscarriage.
