Nuzly Hameem, 28, is an engineer who began protesting in Sri Lanka amid the country’s devastating economic crisis. A new president was put in place this month, but the feeling of victory for activists was short-lived, he said.
On July 22, the new president sent troops to clear the village in a violent overnight raid denounced by the United Nations, the U.S. and human rights groups.
“It will take at least a couple of years to like go back to where we were in 2019,” said Hameem, who might have to seek work abroad amid stalled construction.
