The Uvalde community is more than 80% Hispanic or Latino. Half of residents age 5 or older speak a language other than English at home. But when a Texas House committee released its report about the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School, it was only provided in English.
Outrageous, said Manny Garcia, editor of the Austin American-Statesman, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Journalists at the Statesman and USA TODAY translated and edited the entire 77-page report into Spanish. It was published as a special edition and 10,000 papers were delivered directly to Uvalde residents on Thursday.
