Adoption has been thrown into the abortion rights debate once again. The leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that could overturn Roe v. Wade nods to a longstanding conservative idea that demand for adoption makes abortion less necessary. But many adoptees say adoption was traumatic – and don't want their lives politicized. They are calling out the “dehumanizing” language used to talk about adoption and trying to bring attention to the various challenges and trauma that adoptees have to endure during the process, and even after, especially with their mental health. It's time to center the adoption narrative around children, not adults, adoptees said. They’re calling on Americans to listen to their stories and separate the adoption and abortion conversations.
