A nationwide manhunt ended Monday with the death of Vicky White, a female corrections officer who shot herself after a brief police chase while helping Casey White, a murder suspect, escape an Alabama prison.
The 11-day search began after Vicky White, 56, described by corrections officials as a model employee, removed inmate Casey White, 38, no relation, from jail and disappeared. Police said the two had a jailhouse romance, but authorities were unsure why Vicky White helped the inmate facing a murder charge and serving a 75-year jail sentence on violent offenses.
