Nashville Public Library is protesting banned books by way of a bright yellow library card with a special message: "I read banned books."
The limited-edition cards are a part of the library's Freedom to Read campaign celebrating the "right to read."
On April 28, the Tennessee House and Senate passed legislation that gives Tennessee control over what books are offered in schools. This gives school boards the power to veto and alter curriculum decisions.
During a debate over the legislation last week, Republican state Rep. Jerry Sexton responded, “I don’t have a clue, but I would burn them,” to a question from a Democratic colleague about what he would do with the books banned from libraries.
Some of the books banned include “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood, and “A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo” by Jill Twiss.
