Thousands of Indigenous women go missing and are murdered at disproportionately high rates compared with other ethnic groups. The fact is, nobody knows how many missing or murdered Indigenous women there are as the data is an undercount. But there is enough to have its own acronym: MMIW, enough to be called an “epidemic” and a “crisis.” In seeking explanations for the problem, MMIW activists point to centuries of colonial trauma and prejudicial or ineffective government policies, along with Indigenous communities suffering from higher rates of poverty and other social ills. New laws meant to protect the community have not helped, and there is a call for more to protect Indigenous women. Hanna Harris was murdered in 2013 at the age of 21, and her birthday, May 5, is now the national day of awareness for MMIW.
