Former San Francisco 49ers TE Greg Clark killed himself in July 2021 with a gunshot wound to the head. He was 49 and classified as having chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, at the time of his death. But Clark’s story is about more than the risks of playing football. It’s also about how 20 years after the autopsy of former Steelers center Mike Webster began to raise CTE awareness, there's still confusion and anger over how people suspected of having CTE are treated. It’s about how loved ones cope with loss associated with CTE. Clark's wife, Carie, doesn't want her husband's death to alienate her family from the NFL and says she plans to renew her family’s 49ers season tickets. "With my boys, that’s a real big thing for them, and I don’t want to lose that or feel like there's a disconnect." (Correction: A previous version of this post incorrectly identified Greg Clark.)
