A federal judge in Florida voided the CDC's mask mandate for airplanes and other public transportation today, ruling that it exceeded the authority of U.S. health officials. The CDC had recently extended the mandate, which was set to expire on April 18, until May 3 to allow more time to study the BA.2 omicron subvariant of the coronavirus. The decision Monday by U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle in Tampa also said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention improperly failed to justify its decision and did not follow proper rule-making. Airlines lobbied for months to kill the mask requirement for travelers, arguing that effective air filters on modern planes make transmission of the virus during a flight highly unlikely.
