President Joe Biden is calling out Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During a stop in Iowa Tuesday, President Joe Biden said Russia's actions during its invasion of Ukraine amount to ''genocide.''
“It’s become clearer and clearer that Putin is trying to wipe out the idea of being Ukrainian,” Biden told reporters ahead of boarding Air Force One to return to Washington, D.C. from Iowa.
Biden said the evidence on Russia’s actions is mounting and looks different than last week, when he declined to label Russia’s actions a genocide.
“More evidence is coming out literally of the horrible things that the Russians have done in Ukraine,” Biden said. “We're gonna only learn more and more about the devastation and we’ll let the lawyers decide internationally whether or not it qualifies but it sure seems that way to me.”
The president last week called for a war crimes trial against Russian President Vladimir Putin and announced more sanctions against Russia following reports of atrocities in Ukraine, but stopped short of qualifying them as a “genocide.”
Biden's remarks come as more reports of death in Ukraine's cities roll out. More than 10,000 civilians have been killed in the besieged city of Mariupol since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, the mayor said, as Western nations warned a convoy was on the move for a suspected Russian assault in Ukraine’s east.
