Reynaldo Munoz has become the 3,000th person exonerated in the U.S., after serving 30 years in prison for a 1985 murder in Chicago he always said he didn't commit, the National Registry of Exonerations told USA TODAY. Munoz was paroled in 2016 and his conviction was vacated late last month. He will now seek a certificate of innocence from the state, said his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean. Munoz was "framed" by a group of detectives in a rogue Chicago police division that often resorted to beatings, fabrication of evidence and coercion to clear homicides – all hallmarks of Munoz's case, according to Bonjean and records from other court cases. "I had resentment in the beginning," said Munoz, who now lives with his family outside Tampa, Florida. "I didn't understand why they did this. Then, as the years went along, I had to let go of that resentment because, if not," he said, becoming choked as he paused, "because, if not, it would have destroyed me."
