Stunned residents of the Madison County town of Winterset were reaching out to friends and neighbors Sunday after at least six people, including two children under 5 years old, were killed when when a powerful tornado raced through the central Iowa community. A seventh death was reported in Chariton in Lucas County, but officials reported few details. More than 100,000 homes and businesses across Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana and Iowa were dark at the peak of the storm. The National Weather Service said at least three thunderstorms producing tornadoes had rolled through the area, but the exact number of tornadoes had not been determined.
