Facing problems with food, hygiene and basic safety, more than 1.3 million Ukrainians have left their country to seek asylum in neighboring countries. That’s the equivalent of the entire city of Dallas. The refugees are almost all women, children and elderly people; the government has banned men ages 18 to 60 from leaving the country. They are escaping constant shelling and bombing in apartment buildings and residential neighborhoods. The people who remain have been seeking shelter in basements, office buildings and metro stations as Russian forces advance on key cities. About 2,000 civilians have died, the Ukrainian government said on Wednesday. The United Nations was able to confirm 227 civilians dead and 525 injured but warned the numbers are an undercount. The majority of Ukraine's refugees – 756,303 of them, more than the population of Seattle – have gone to Poland as of Friday. Behind Russia and Ukraine, Poland is the third-largest Slavic country in Europe. Poland is also a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.
