It’s been a decade since one of the most notorious killings in modern American history.
Since Trayvon Martin’s death on Feb. 26, 2012, a new era of social activism has emerged – led by a new, social media-savvy generation.
The killing – and delayed arrest of George Zimmerman – uncorked a wave of protests across the U.S., many of which used social media platforms to boost awareness.
It also sparked a phrase and hashtag that has become the rallying cry of a social movement: Black Lives Matter.
Trayvon’s case “grew a whole new crop of civil rights lawyers, activists, people who want to be civil rights lawyers,” said Natalie Jackson, an attorney and native of Sanford, Florida, where Martin was killed. “Every young law student I meet says they want to be a civil rights lawyer, and they all talk about Trayvon.”
Ten years after George Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the impact of the case can still be felt.
