Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged his country to "stand firm" against the siege that could determine its future.
He refused American help to evacuate, making it very clear where he plans on staying.
Russian forces closed in on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv in the predawn hours of Saturday, with explosions rocking the city outskirts as Zelenskyy urged his people to fight the Russian invaders and survive the night however they could.
But while his message continued defiant, Russians pressed in from several directions around Kyiv. Photos from Ukraine detailed destruction by Russian troops and bombs, with Ukrainian citizens huddled in underground bomb shelters or trying to flee their country to safety, carrying family members and what possessions they could.
