In 1942, Camp Amache held 7,500 Japanese Americans prisoner. Survivors want the world to remember.
On Feb. 19 — the 80th anniversary of President Roosevelt’s order creating ten detention camps for Japanese Americans during World War II — USA TODAY is telling the story of Camp Amache through the accounts of survivors and their descendants.
"No one ever asked them if they supported the war. They were just taken away because they were Japanese," said Mitch Homma, whose father was locked up at Amache as a child, along with his father's two siblings and their parents.
In a desolate corner of Colorado, the US government hastily erected Camp Amache in 1942. Now, Congress is considering making it a historic site.
Backers are hopeful that formal recognition will help tell the story of both the detention center and the people forced to live there.
