Kathi Kuykendall uses a newer approach to dealing with a drug addict. It looks to reduce the harms associated with drug use.
Harm reduction means supplying addicts with naloxone, clean needles and test strips. It means urging them not to get high alone. It means doing all of that until they reach a point where they want to quit drugs
People who counsel addicts and those who study addiction believe harm reduction is the way to go. Many of them argue you can't bully an addict into remission any more than you can bully a cancer patient into remission.
But not many people are talking about harm reduction when Kathi starts driving Asa in 2015; she has no idea there's a name for what she is doing.
She just knows she has to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to keep her child alive.
