The Gullah Geechee community has inhabited a Georgia island for centuries, but they’re facing dual challenges to their land. Outsiders, or “come heres,” want to develop the area amid a rise in tourism along the Southeast coast of the U.S. Meanwhile, rising sea levels threaten the very existence of the land. “We've been here since slavery. And this land, people had to fight over it to get it,” said Maurice Bailey, one of the last Geechee on Sapelo Island.
