A year in photos: June 29, 2021; Surfside, FL Rescuers continue to search through the rubble of the Champlain Towers south condo collapse. The collapse killed 98 people, 9 of whom may have initially survived, but were not found by rescue teams, and investigation found. "Covering the tragedy in Surfside was intense and heartbreaking," USA TODAY Network photographer Andrew West said. "As I arrived at the site with several other photographers, I was struck by the enormity of the situation … Sadness and heartache permeated the air. I can’t even imagine what the families and friends of the victims endured at this time ... I have covered many disasters in my career as a photojournalist, but the time I spent at the Surfside condo collapse ranks up there with the most devastating."
