‘Fabulous’ Lena Richard: The cooking queen of New Orleans
Lena Richard — New Orleans’ most famous Black chef of the Jim Crow era — leveraged her culinary talents to become a successful entrepreneur. But most people know little about her if they know of her at all.
She also hosted a twice-weekly local television show in the last two years of her life, making her almost certainly the first Black TV chef in the US, food historians say.
After she passed in 1950, Chef Richard was largely forgotten for the next 50 years.
She is frequently compared to the careers of white chefs and businesswomen, but what if we flip that lens, asks food historian Jessica Harris (@africooks). What if Martha Stewart was described as the white Lena Richard?
“There is a uniqueness and genius to herthat needs to be celebrated,” said Harris.
