In the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody, now former officer Austin Handle and transport officer Brian Bolden are battling two separate government agencies behind their retaliation claims. Last year, they reported a department lieutenant who had sent lewd photos to other officers and allegedly demanded they do the same in order to get lucrative overtime jobs. An internal affairs investigation proved the lieutenant sent the photos but the investigation stopped short of saying the officers who played along received better assignments. Dunwoody police fired Handle three days later. They said he lied to them during an unrelated internal investigation. The Dunwoody police also tried to block Handle from claiming unemployment, using the findings of the internal investigation against him. On Handle’s last round of appeals, the employment board overturned Dunwoody’s denials. Handle, in the meantime, had to take a job at a home improvement store to make ends meet. Bolden still works for the department but filed a claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, saying his supervisors have targeted him for bogus internal affairs investigations.
