World AIDS Day 2021: An international day of raising awareness and remembering lives lost More than 36 million people, including 700,000 Americans, have died from AIDS-related illness since the first known case of AIDS was reported 40 years ago. On Wednesday, President Joe Biden laid out a new HIV/AIDS strategy, including a focus on the growing population of people aging with HIV. More than half of the 1.2 million people in the United States who are currently living with HIV are over age 50. The plan will also recognize racism as a serious health threat, expand the focus on addressing issues like homelessness that make it hard to fight HIV/AIDS and encourage reform of state HIV criminalization laws.
